Find Us
There are three raised beds south of Cole Hall Residence Hall, next to the tennis courts. The beds include: Native plants, pollinators (strawberries, borrage, and peas), and three sisters (corn, squash, and beans).
There are two raised beds south of Sellery Residence Hall, close to the bike racks. The Salad bed consists of varieties of lettuce, kale, peas, chard, and spinach. The Pizza bed is simply tomatoes and basil.
There is only one raised bed in the court yard of Smith Residence Hall. Due to the low amount of sunlight, we decided to plant root vegetables such as beets, radishes, and carrots.
More Resources
There are many more resources available both on and off campus for fresh food accessibility and educational resources.
Associated Students of Madison Food Pantry
ASM recently set in motion a food pantry for students of UW-Madison. The food pantry is located on 333 East Campus Mall, on the 4th floor of Student Activity Center. ASM accepts donations as well.
F.H. King Students for Sustainable Agriculture
F.H. King student organization has a 2-acre farm and a roof-top garden which produces more than 5000 pounds of vegetables every growing season. These vegetables are handed out to students from May to October. Be sure to head out to East Campus Mall every Friday at 1pm to get your share of vegetables! Additionally, F.H. King holds a variety of events centered around sustainable agriculture and environmental justice to engage students in discussions and workshops.
Growing Power
Growing Power Madison is actively participating in providing food security and accessibility for the community members of South Madison. Additionally, this is a great educational resource for those interested in urban gardening. Robert Pierce, the director of Growing Power Madison, is a hero to many of us. He also is the director of the South Madison farmer's market.
Farmers' Market
There are multiple farmer's markets around Madison. From May to October, head out to the Capitol Square and join the Dane County Farmers' Market in supporting local farmers. During the winter the farmer's market moves to an indoor location. If the time and the location doesn't work for you, check out Monroe Street Farmers' Market and Eastside Farmers' Market.
Eagle Heights Community Gardens
Almost a mile west of the campus, bounded by the Lakeshore Nature Preserve, is a beautiful valley of community gardens. Members of the Madison community, along with UW horticulture researchers and F.H. King student organization have their own share of land on which they garden and enjoy the fruit of their labor. Pay a visit to this magical place, volunteer, and enjoy some delicious apples and mulberries. And if you feel ready, perhaps start your own garden!
Coming soon: Seed Bank
A new project is on its way! We are hoping to start UW's own seed bank for students and faculty members.
