Edible Landscapes Project
UW - Madison
Once Upon a Time . . .
In 2014 Aaron, Aida, and Tom, who focused on different disciplins of environmentalism, came together to address issues of sustainable agriculture, food systems, and environmental justice on the campus of University of Wisconsin-Madison. These students spent their time planning, writing proposals, gathering the support of students and professors, and meeting with the University officials to introduce six raised beds on campus for the purpose of urban gardening. After months of effort and battle, in August of 2014, six wooden raised beds transformed the ordinary campus landscapes into beautiful edible landscapes and marked the start of The Edible Landscapes Project.
Since then, a coalition of campus student organizations has been formed to plan the beds, reach out to students, and spread the movement. The Edible Landscapes Project is a program by students for students in an effort to educate people and raise awareness about environmental issues centered around food, and most importantly serve as a resource for students who face food insecurity.
